In connection with co-curating the Africa section of the Hajj exhibition that was held in the British Museum (March-June 2012) I collected contemporary Hajj souvenirs in Bamako and Timbuktu, Mali, in November 2010 (see Mali – Hajj). These formed part of the exhibition. I also documented their vendors and uses. Particular locations studied were the market next to the Grand Mosque in Bamako, and at various locations clustered around the central market in Timbuktu. I also completed an inventory of relevant manuscripts in Arabic and other languages written in the Arabic script for potential display in the exhibition at the Centre de Recherche Ahmed Baba, Mamma Haidara Library, and Fondation Kati in Timbuktu.
